Dana Abbott Curtis was born and raised in Worcester, Massachusetts. As a young man he served as a Marine in World War II. He married Mildred Rose Belair in 1946, and they had two children: Bonita G. Willand and Robert J. Curtis. In 1950 he was stationed with the U.S. Army in Okinawa, and later that same year he served as an infantryman and an engineer for the U.S. Army in the Korean War Jennifer R. Willand Dillard is the granddaughter of Dana Abbott Curtis. She too grew up in Massachusetts. However, she later lived in Connecticut and Montana where she earned her Bachelor of Arts and Masters of Public Administration, respectively.
